The inside story of Vera-Ellen/ a dancing dynamo

a well wriiten biography of the wonderful dancer, Vera-Ellen.
Although small in size, Vera was a dancer that rivaled dancers such as Cyd Charrise, Ginger Rogers, Ann Miller.... A dancer of fine detail, quick and deliberate starts,stops, effortless full leg extensions and boundless energy. Usually Vera was the one to watch who spun tirelessly in circles and remained on her toes throughout with breath to spare. Although White Christmas is the movie, with Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye and Rosemary Clooney in which she's mostly associated with. You'll discover she started out singing in choruses in various movies and became a dynamic actress/dancer.This biography contains many photos of Vera from a small girl until her later adult years. always a professional and true natural talent, you'll find she was a disciplined performer who celebrated the sheer joy of dance with her every move.
a great insight to the life of a woman who will never be forgotten and was credit to the entertainment industry.

I have always been curious about her life and the battle over her weight and now I understand much more about what drove her in this area. Just wish she had had more joy! A great talent!

Hollywood Horror Story

There is something quite creepy in the story of Vera-Ellen's rise to fame, how she dazzled all too briefly in a few musicals of the late forties and fifties, how she was misused and discarded by MGM, and how she sacrificed her health and private life for a career that ultimately brought her pain, lonelieness and an early death. This almost reads like a "What not to Do" manual for young upcoming performers. At first, Vera-Ellen did all the right things. Her perfectionism made her a brilliant dancer, but it also fuelled a neurotic obsession with her weight that went into overdrive when MGM told her she should be thinner.
That started the decline which - in this biography reads like a Gothic horror story. In every appearance, even when extreme dieting had started to age her prematurely, she exuded a joyous exuberance which matched her classy dancing talents. And yet her contributions to the Hollywood musical are mostly ignored, most woundingly in "The MGM Stock Company" where she is pictured in the group cover pic, but does not rate her own chapter, even tho minor character actors do. David Soren goes overboard in praising her acting talents. His obvious adoration of her is touching. But we still need a more balanced account of Vera-Ellen's life and achievments. Sadly, with the star herself and most of her peers gone, we may never get it. Thank God that video and DVDs have preserved her vibrant talent.

Close adaptation to movie...and a good read

Just in case you do not know already, Damien: Omen II is an adaptation of the movie of the same name. Damien: Omen II is a sequel to "The Omen'. The original Omen movie started out as a novel, while Damien: Omen II started out as a screenplay which the novel is closely based on.
The story takes place seven years later in which Damien the Antichrist is now thirteen years old, and totally in the dark about his diabolic heritage and destiny. He now lives with his uncle, who runs Thorn Industries, his second wife Ann, and his cousin Mark. As usual, anybody who steps in Damien's way to his destiny or knows his true nature is promptly knocked off in ingenious and gruesome ways. WHile a huge black mastiff lingers around Damien in the first movie/novel, now a monstrous raven hovers ominously nearby.
The biggest change in the novel from the movie is the Joan Hart character. In the film, she was merely just a reason for the producers to stick in another gruesome death scene. In the novel, her role was expanded. Her association switched from the David Warner character in the first movie to the archeologist Michael Morgan in the second film's prolouge.
Another change is Ann Thorn. In the film it is suggested that she was in league with the DEvil and was dispatched when her usefulness was over. In the book, it is not clear what her true motivation was in the story's finale.
Earlier editions contains photographs from the movie, which you may be able to find in used book stores.
Overall, the book is a good read, even though it lacked the religious details and atmosphere of the first movie, the book still ended with an evil note like the first one, in which evil triumphs.

Professional novelization lacks fear.

This novelization of the second film in the omen series is a professional job, it just isn't that scary (a problem the film it's based on had as well). It was also written by Joseph Howard, not David Seltzer as listed above. Fans of the series will want to search for it anyway, for there are minor differences in the story that will no doubt be of interest.

The storyline might not be as good as the original...but it was better written and more exciting to read. The original explained more in detail, but this book had me on the edge of the seat! Excellent read!

OD Classic

This is one of the books that I've dog-eared, underlined, and referenced over and over, so much so that I'm on my second copy. It goes beyond the typical change management information, and gives valuable tools for assessing the readiness for change, identifying roles people assume in a change situation; charting responsibilities in a change process, among others. In my opinion, this isn't a book for scholars, it is a book for managers and those who help them plan and manage complex organization transitions.

Pop-Psychology for OD

Beckhard and Harris' book on organizational transition is easily one of the worst I have ever read on the subject. It is not necessarily the kind of information that is conveyed here, nor is it the style with which it is done. Rather, if you have even the slightest concept of the meaning of OD and related topics then your knowledge is perhaps well beyond the scope of this book. Though the book does represent a nice introduction to the management of change, it is hardly worth its price.It barely surpasses the quality of an average pop-psychology book but certainly is of little value to scholars.

If you want practical application this is great

I am an experienced transformational change professional and have used this book to provide both an overview model / framework and for providing pragmatic strategies and actions to undertake major change and development initiatives. I have used the framework and ideas in several large initiatives and have found they work extremely well. Of course if you are working at this level you need deep knowledge of the approaches, disciplines and practice surrounding transformation and development however to have a framework that is straightforward for senior managers and staff and other stakeholders to grasp is a key benefit the book provides. I saw a review from a detractor (posted in 1999 so old hat now) and was surprised that he or she did not appreciate the framework or ideas. Highly recommended for the reasons provided above.
