About the Author

Bill Hybels is the founding and senior pastor of Willow Creek Community Church in South Barrington, Ill., and chairman of the board for the Willow Creek Association. Nuggets of Leadership Wisdom

Bill's latest book is a kind of distillation of his learnings, values, and leadership principles from 30+ years at Willow. Written in 76 short, concise chapters, "Axiom" is both inspiring and instructive. Each chapter contains a principle, wrapped in a slogan (or "Axiom") that Bill has coined to summarize a specific facet of leadershipo. The chapters are self-contained, like Proverbs. You can read one, put the book down and go apply the principle. No chapter takes more than 10 minutes to read, but each will take months (if not years) to fully implement.

Axiom is one of the most practical books on church leadership in our day. I found myself putting most chapters into practice the same day I read them. Those familiar with WillowWorld will recognize many (if not all) the book's principles from previous Leadership Summits or Hybels' sermons. For me, the book was both a great review and a kick in the seat to go lead better, and lead better in specific ways.

Axiom reminded me once again of the importance of leading daily, improving myself and my church regularly, not settling for incremental growth, and the absolute necessity of church leaders fighting for the advancement of the kingdom. I recommend this book to all churchworld leaders.

Speed of the Leader, Speed of the Team

Bill Hybels revs up in chapter one--and the good stuff is still kicking in chapter 68, "Read All You Can." He writes, "I have little patience with leaders who get themselves into leadership binds and then confess that they haven't read a leadership book in years. If you're a serious-minded leader, you will read." In the book's foreword, Henry Cloud writes, "Great leaders do their homework so that weariness and unsteadiness are kept at bay."

Amen to that vote for lifelong learning, also affirmed in the "Book Bucket" one of 20 buckets in my book, Mastering The Management Buckets: 20 Critical Competencies for Leading Your Business or Non-profit. Consequently, I was eager to read the latest book from Bill Hybels, one of the most gifted leaders I've ever met. Axiom, with 76 pithy leadership proverbs, doesn't disappoint.

"Speed of the leader, speed of the team," was and is one of Bill's oft-mentioned axioms. Few leaders make this pronouncement because the camera immediately focuses in on them. As the first president of Willow Creek Association, I watched Hybels up close and he always shared that core value confidently, yet humbly. His walk and his talk backed it up. He writes, "If you cannot say, `Follow me,' to your followers--and mean it--then you've got a problem, a big one."

He elaborates. "Follow my values. Follow my integrity. Follow my work ethic, my commitment, and my communication patterns. Fight as I fight. Focus as I focus. Sacrifice as I sacrifice. Love as I love. Repent as I repent. Admit wrong as I admit wrong. Endure hardship as I endure hardship." Then he concludes this one-page proverb with the whole point of it. "When requisite actions back them up, these are the words that set followers' hearts soaring."

Scan the 76 mini-chapter titles and you'll be pulled into the street-smart, God-smart wisdom. They include: Language Matters, Make the Big Ask, Hire Tens, The Dangers of Incrementalism, Never Say Someone's No for Them, The Tunnel of Chaos (a key idea in my Culture Bucket), Disagree Without Drawing Blood, Admit Mistakes and Your Stock Goes Up, and Arrive Early or Not at All.

Warning! Don't carelessly toss these axioms into your repertoire without understanding the biblical and leadership context. In my days at Willow, "Don't Screw Up" was a common benediction at meetings--but it created anxiety, not blessing. The leader knew how to communicate it, but the lieutenants didn't.

a concise toolbox for any leader

Leadership is no easy task. In the midst of all the hard work and busyness, an ordinarily effective leader can become careless, frustrated, or downright hopeless. Bill Hybels who has spent three decades building one of the most successful churches in America, has dedicated his life to developing successful ministry leaders around the world. Too often he has seen churches and ministries fail due to a considerable lack of quality leadership. God's work demands our best.

Hybels attempts to break leadership into small, manageable leadership truths. Leadership Axioms aims to provide leaders with a toolbox of handy leadership proverbs that he or she can apply to almost any leadership challenge.

Obviously, these axioms will not solve every single leadership dilemma. The leader needs to take this information, digest it, and use it appropriately. At times the axioms seem to contradict each other (see chapters Language Matters and Just Say It), but in the end, these words will ring true to any leader. Having this reference on your shelf would be a good idea.

About the Author
Joseph Moravek is the HVACR director at Nance Universal HVACR Technical School in Beaumont, Texas, where he is responsible for short- and long-term training course development and updating curriculum. He also occasionally teaches local and overseas HVACR classes for Nance. In addition, he serves as a consultant with Mechanical Training Service, Houston, Texas, doing EPA training, continuing education for contractors and other custom developed coursework. A licensed air conditioning and refrigeration contractor in the state of Texas, he holds several ICE and NATE certifications, is a member of the ASHRAE, CARE and AEE professional organizations and has a master's degree in education. Mr. Moravek started in the HVACR profession in 1976 doing heat load calculation for a federally-funded weatherization program. His experience also includes working as an HVACR technician and inspector for the city of Houston. He served as the HVACR lead instructor at Lee College for 14 years.

Simon Lovell Changed My Life

I have been following Simon's work for quite awhile now and I have been so pleased with the results. I am the typical case of someone who has "TRIED EVERYTHING" and I didn't have high expectations going into Simon's programs. Within a week I had instantly changed the way in which I approached my business and my business has soared.

In 8 weeks I have completely smashed the last quarter of 2015 and have shown a gradual increase every week which has been exceptional. In this book, he shows how all the skill in the world is useless if the mind does not allow that skill to be expressed. Ashwath writes of an intelligence that brings about a balance between thinking, feeling and being in the moment. An intelligence that could perhaps lead not only to peak performance states, but also change the way one looks at the world and one’s role in it. An intelligence that is spiritual, indigenous and considered a part of this nation’s bloodstream, yet somehow remains hidden. And how the game he loved most would be instrumental in revealing it.

About the Author:

For the past two years Ashwath Aiyappa worked extremely hard on writing this book, completing the manuscript before his untimely demise in tragic circumstances.

Ashwath began playing cricket at a very young age, and found early success when he represented the Karnataka state Under-16 team. He was also a Ranji probable and played first division league cricket for several top clubs in Bengaluru and Mumbai – Jawahars, Swastik Union, BUCC and DY Patil. In addition, he undertook coaching assignments at the PeepalGrove School in Sadum (Andhra Pradesh), where he was much loved and adored by the children.

With a degree in computer science from St Joseph’s College, Ashwath continued being a student throughout. He had a huge appetite for knowledge – he read widely on a range of subjects including psychology, philosophy, religion, history, business and of course sport. Ashwath also undertook several online training courses and sought the advice of various experts. Apart from his sporting achievements, he was an entrepreneur. He co-founded a very successful software company, later selling his stake to concentrate on cricket.

Ashwath Aiyappa represented Karnataka at the Under-16 level and was also a Ranji probable. He played first division league cricket for several top clubs in Bengaluru and Mumbai – Jawahars, Swastik Union, BUCC and DY Patil. Ashwath has a degree in computer science from St Joseph’s College, Bengaluru. Apart from his sporting achievements, he was an entrepreneur. He co-founded a very successful software company, later selling his stake to concentrate on cricket.

Ashwath tragically passed away in April 2014 in a drowning accident, before the release of the book.

Twenty years is a long time to foster a grudge

Two decades ago, Victoria Rutherford stood by while her father reamed out Adam Benson, the son of his ranch hand, for making out with his daughter in the Rutherford's barn. While accusing Benson of all but being a rapist, Victoria was unable to destroy her father's belief that she was perfect. Because of that, the Bensons were evicted from the Rutherford ranch and from there his father resumed drinking and Adam and his mother struggled to make ends meet. Now, the tables have turned and to save her father's ranch, Victoria must marry Adam and work as his ranch hand and maid in order to better understand the position he was in twenty years ago at the mercy of her and her father. Victoria finds herself regressing into the fascination she had for him when she was fifteen years old and all too soon realizes that the love she feels for him is a "grown-up" one.
Though Victoria Pade's writing is adequate, I was rather disappointed with the execution of this story for two reasons. My first problem was with the time span. The brevity of it made the resolution rather unbelievable. My second problem was with the superficiality of both the hero and the heroine. Adam has had twenty years to build Victoria into a "witch" and to nurture his resentment but Victoria's beauty has him rethinking his intentions. Victoria is enchanted by how handsome he looks that she can't help but be attracted to him despite the fact that he hates her. The utter lack of conviction on the parts of both characters made it hard to like either one. For a story that is based on a twenty-year old resentment, I expected there to be a great deal more development instead of a large amount of chemistry. Pade's installment of this series takes it a step down and that's unfortunate.

Montana Maverick series adds another great book

Teenage lust turns to a disaster for Adams family. Victoria and successful Adam meet again under a revenge scheme which included a marriage to each other. After the revenge scheme turned out differently than planned a love developed. This book was another great read in Montana Maverick series.

About the Author
David A. Fiensy is Professor of Biblical Studies at Kentucky Christian University and Associate Director of the Shikhin Excavation Project in (Galilee) Israel. He is the author of a number of books, including Social History of Palestine in the Herodian Period (Edwin Mellen Press), Message and Ministry of Jesus (University Press of America), and Jesus the Galilean (Gorgias). Ralph K. Hawkins is Associate Professor of Religious Studies at Averett University. His books include The Iron Age I Structure on Mt. Ebal: Excavation and Interpretation (Eisenbrauns) and How Israel became a People (Abingdon).

Improved understanding of 1st century Galilee

The chapters of this book are written mostly by archaeologists and scholars who regularly excavate in the Galilee. The best chapter by far is by Galilean archaeologist Mordechai Aviam, but others are well done too.

The archaeologists present information for a thriving economy in early 1st century Galilee. Doug Oakman responds from a sociological perspective, insisting the peasant and oppression model (with improvements since John Dominic Crossan) better explains the social and economic conditions of early 1st century Galilee. The primary editor, Fiensy, goes to the middle with his nuance that the Galilean economy was still new because of the recent Hasmonean settlements of faithful Judeans (an archaeological assessment), still too new for widespread debt defaults, but allows that the beginnings of widespread debt problems existed (a sociological assessment) and expanded during the later period of Gospels composition (Fiensy's nuance). Fiensy does not explain how such later, deteriorating economic conditions influenced Gospels that possibly were not composed by full time residents of the Galilee, who could observe the deteriorating economy.

The book is readable and presents up-to-date discoveries. There is only incidental interaction with Gospels references to social and economic conditions, but certainly enough to perceive the relevance of the topics.

Highly recommended to anyone from academia to lay teachers.

Catches the reader up-to-speed on development in the study of Galilee

In the introductory essay to The Galilean Economy in the Time of Jesus David A. Fiensy (citing Seán Freyne) comments that "the current quest for the historical Jesus is also by necessity a search for the historical Galilee." (2) This is because "the current quest" or "third quest" has focused upon Géza Vermes' "Jesus the Jew" and if one is going to talk about the Jewishness of Jesus one must talk about Galilee, where most of what is remembered about Jesus is reported to have occurred. Scholars such as Freyne, J.D. Crossan, J.L. Reed, R.A. Horsley, and many others have done a fair job trying to reconstruct the historian's Jesus as he may have fit into first century Galilee. Their work has led many Jesus scholars as well as popular audiences to imagine Jesus to have been a peasant worker under the oppressive puppet regimes of Herod the Great and Herod Antipas, but this picture may be overly simplistic when read against the evidence. Of course, then—as this volume displays quite well—there is the problem of interpreting the evidence, which is not straight forward, and which has to be filtered through interpretive paradigms.

For example, Mordechai Aviam's essay "People, Land, Economy, and Belief in First-Century Galilee and Its Origins: A Comprehensive Archaeological Synthesis" (5-48) relies almost solely upon the archaeological evidence. He concludes that excavations of Yodefat and Gamla "prove that villages in Galilee were not poor. Galilean villagers were not peasants." (43) The conclusion is reached by examining a variety of elements such as Herod Antipas' investment in building projects within his own territory, the size of housing remains, the sorts of imported goods that couldn't be afforded if everyone was barely being sustained, local industries ranging from wool work to pottery, etc. In C. Thomas McCollough's essay "City and Village in Lower Galilee: The Import of the Archaeological Excavations at Sepphoris and Khirbet Qana (Cana) for Framing the Economic Context of Jesus" (49-74) the conclusions are similar, though not as bold. McCollough argues that "surrounding villages were growing and thriving in the pre-70 period [which] suggests that the initial phrase of the construction of Sepphoris (and Tiberias) had a positive economic impact on Lower Galilee." (71) He concludes, "The material culture belies any sort of simple description or characterization, such as 'peasant villages.'" These villages have produced evidence that in the early decades of the first century economic stratification and diversification were endemic to village life." (69) Both Aviam and McCollough argue that Galilee had good relations with Judea, seemingly incorporating forms of Judaism that were aligned with the vision of the Jerusalem elite and its temple cult.

In Sharon Lea Mattila's essay "Revisiting Jesus' Capernaum: A Village of Only Subsistence-Level Fishers and Farmers?" (75-138) the author challenges several points made about Capernaum in Crossan's and Reed's 2001 book Excavating Jesus: Beneath the Stones, Behind the Text. After introducing the reader to life on the ground in Capernaum, and the archaeological work being done there, she challenges Crossan and Reed on the following points: First, their assertion that "there were no luxary items or other indications of wealth recovered from pre-Byzantine contexts at the site". (90) Second, she argues that the assertion that "inhabitants of Capernaum of Jesus' time were indeed members of such a 'peasantry' is...a complete non sequitur." Third, she challenges the assumption made by Crossan, Reed, Freyne, and Horsley that the "Triple Courtyard House" represents a complex where several families have a room each while sharing a courtyard whereas the Northeastern House is presented as the home of a wealthy family. She argues that this claim lacks evidence. Fourth, she rebuffs the idea that the walls of the first aforementioned house are constructed of materials that indicate poverty. She concludes that what we've found is the skeletal structure of the house, not its full structure as it would have been when used as a home.

Douglas E. Oakman's "Execrating? or Execrable Peasants!" (139-164) is a response to Aviam's essay. In it he gives considerable space to the unfolding debate in the social sciences over the word "peasant" and what and who it describes. Based on his criteria, he concludes, "We could think of Herodian Palestine as a whole as a 'peasant society.'" His most important criteria include, "One half or more of the total production must be agricultural"; "More than half the working population must be engaged in agriculture"; and "agrarian production is accomplished by family household units." (148-149) In his estimation this is true of Galilee under the Herods. He then creates a scenario where the political function of money may help the town dwellers, but it "puts stress" upon the lives of the agrarian population, especially as the need for more production results in more borrowing and hence more debt.

"Assessing the Economy of Galilee in the Late Second Temple Period: Five Considerations" (165-186) by David A. Fiensy is the final essay of the volume. Those "five considerations" include (1) an examination of the "current broader academic environment, specifically the studies of the ancient economy among classical historians"; (2) the differences "between Galilee and other Israelite territories (especially Judea)"; (3) chronological distinctions; (4) the "fragmentary nature of the data"; and (5) "the function of social science models". (166) Fiensy argues that we must use a variety of models in order to understand an ancient economy, not just one, realizing these are model, fallible, yet helpful if we are going to even attempt reconstruction. He does agree with the other essayists when he says, "...the extreme distance between the elites and the lower class, found elsewhere in the Roman Empire and evidently in Judea, was diminished in Galilee" but he doesn't deny that "there certainly was an economic distance between the two groups". (171)

I found this volume to be extremely helpful as concerns updating me on what is being debated about Galilee. For those studying the historical Jesus these discussions should be front and center (or John the Baptist, or incipient Christianity, etc.)

A must have for a "Wild Things" fan

"Seven Little Monsters" by Maurice Sendak is a delightful little counting book for any true fan of "Where the Wild Things Are". "Seven Little Monsters" is an unknown follow-up to Sendak's Caldecott winning, "Where the Wild Things Are". The book takes the Wild Things characters, except Max, and shows their mischievous side. Sendak uses simple rhyming text and familiar illustrations. "Seven Little Monsters" is a great book to use in the preschool classroom, especially around Halloween. "Seven Little Monsters" is a great addition to anyone's library!

This was my daughter's favorite book when she was about three. It seemed so strange that this would be so, given the faint colors compared to Sendak's other fanciful books, my favorites. It was worn to pieces by the time she was five, so I was so happy to find this copy still available. Thanks!!!
