Very helpful guide of the retail value of Near Mint LP's issued in the U.S., however, some more esoteric US releases with hobby value of more than $10 are missing. Nonetheless, a very exhaustive and helpful guide.

Gets bogged down in the detail

The story is well known. In May 2007, Kate and Gerry McCann and their three children went on holiday to a resort in Portugal, along with several friends and their children. The first few days of the holiday passed uneventfully, with the children spending most of their days in the kids club while the parents had tennis lessons and relaxed. In the evenings, the parents all got in the habit of leaving their children sleeping in their bedrooms while they dined in a nearby tapas restaurant, taking turns to go back and check on the children at regular intervals. Until one fateful evening when three year old Madeleine disappeared shortly after the 9pm check. The police were called, the media descended and the story became worldwide news.

This is Kate McCann's account of that holiday and the investigation that followed, based on the detailed diaries that she kept. The book captures the way she endlessly revisits the days before Madeleine's disappearance, looking for clues, wondering what errors of judgement she might have made. Madeleine had been very tired that night - could she have been drugged? Or just a worn out little girl on holiday? She had cried out the night before - was someone trying to get into the room? Or did one of the children simply have a bad dream? Was it a mistake to let the restaurant staff know that children were being left unattended in their bedrooms?

I can understand the way that you get lulled into the security of a holiday resort and forget that you are actually in a foreign country. Once Madeleine disappeared, this reality came home to the McCanns in a big way. Much as the French medical system was criticized after the death of Princess Diana, the Portuguese police procedures are criticized not just by the McCanns and their family, but by the British policeforce and media. Kate was frustrated by the absence of communication, by translation issues, the failure to interrogate more potential witnesses, the failure to follow up on promising leads.

I felt that the book could have done with a stronger editorial hand. There's a lot of detail, to the point that it gets overwhelming in parts, and it's not always coherently presented. For example she tells us that on the night in question their friend Matt did the 9.30pm check, but reported back that all was quiet. We don't find out until almost 100 pages later whether that meant that he went into the apartment at all, let along whether he visually checked the children. Witness sightings of men watching the apartment are also not mentioned until very late in the book.

However two things do emerge clearly: Kate's enormous guilt about what happened and her highly defensive personality. Every decision that she or Gerry made, whether it's about their parenting decisions or their quest to find their daughter, is justified. Looking around the internet and the way that every statement they make is endlessly scrutinized and judged partially explains that attitude. In the final chapters, Kate talks freely about how this entire experience has changed her and Gerry. The hate mail that she receives (letters that say "your daughter will be getting tortured and it's all because of you"). The dilemma she faces when her children misbehave in public and she feels she is being judged on how she interacts with them. Her guilt if she found herself enjoying anything.

In summary: an interesting read, but not as well written as I would have liked. Too long and it gets bogged down in irrelevant details. However it does give an insight into everything that the McCanns have gone through. If you dislike the McCanns, I'd advise giving it a miss: you are unlikely to feel differently about them from reading this book.

Repellent--takes no blame and too much information

As ever, she takes no blame for her child's disappearance, though she and her husband left three children--a three year old and two year old twins--alone in an unlocked holiday apartment every night of their vacation so they could go out to eat and drink with friends. You couldn't see the doors where they sat, and you couldn't hear the sounds of a child being abducted (or a child crying for her parents, which had happened previous nights of the holiday). It was much farther away than the back yard (the McCann's claim) and if you're in the back yard and the kids are asleep, do you leave the front door unlocked? They left the apartment unlocked "in case of fire". Right. Madeleine was going to usher her brother and sister to safety?

These are two doctors. They know that if they learned a patient or a patient's parent had done that, they'd have to report the parents to the police. And still Kate claims they did "responsible parenting."

Despite that, the disappearance isn't the parents' fault at all. And despite the fact that the British and Portuguese police found absolutely no evidence of an abduction but think Madeleine died accidentally in the apartment, the McCanns insist that she must have been abducted--even waking and going outside to look for her parents isn't a possibility. No, it's got to be some mean man there's no trace of--not a fingerprint, not a hair, not a fiber.

Perhaps a spot of knock-out meds so the kids wouldn't cry? Once the McCanns were back in the apartment, Kate kept sticking a finger under the twins' noses, according to her best friend, who was with them. "Still breathing? Or are you going to die too??"

Kate McCann claims that she wrote this to aid in the search and for her children to read. How reporting on her sex life and describing the parents' violent, horrific idea of what might have happened to Madeleine in the hands of a child molester are going to help the search is unclear. And the thought that Kate wrote the book for her children, as she claims? So they get to read about Mom and Dad's sex life, and a description of what a pervert might do that is unnecessary, graphic, and so shocking that it made me nauseated? No. No. No sane parent with any sensitivity or love for her children could have written that "for her children."

Fiction is what this is. I didn't pay for this rubbish. I downloaded a free copy.This book reconfirmed the parents guilt. If the dogs are so unreliable why are they being used again in Portugal to find Madeleines body? The Mcscams must carry on claiming Maddie is alive that way fools can keep donating to the fraudulent fund created minutes after the bogus abduction. These two so called parents are utterly transparent.

Great Modernization of Familiar Beatles tunes!

Like all the Hal Leonard Jazz-Play-Along series this new addition is both challenging to play, great jazz version arrangements (very creative interpretations that not only are good..but add new "flavor" to all the included songs), and useful for practice or performance. As a matter of fact, I have a solo act and will be performing several of the songs in this book today! well worth the $ and useful for beginner to pro players!

Great jazz arrangements, well worth getting

I LOVE this play-along volume. I'm a hardcore, longtime Aebersold user - and this is the very first play-along I've tried from this particular series. Very glad I did.

These jazz versions of Beatles classic are consistently inventive and often challenging. I think some people - both experienced improvisers and newcomers - think that play-alongs in general are cheesy. While nothing is a substitute for working with real live musicians, I think book/CD combos such as these are indispensable for practicing improv.

The CD has each of the tunes with a horn playing the melody line over the piano, bass, drums backing. And then the same track without the melody line. My only real issue is that the tracks are shorter - Aebersold's provide much more room to stretch out and improvise over the changes.

"Let It Be" is given a reggae-ish vibe. "Lady Madonna" has calypso feel. "Come Together" is rendered as appropriately funky fusion. "Fool on the Hill" becomes a bossa nova. I love working with these and plan to incorporate these versions (the chord progressions have been reharmonized and work very well) in a live setting.

For serious Jazz musicians only! You may have played Beatles tunes before, but not like this. These are definately Jazz versions of these Beatles standards. A must have for the Jazz musician who wants to add Beatles songs to his set list.

The ache of nostalgia...

There are those who love Nabokov, and those who haven't figured him out yet. Pnin is a good "Starter Book" for most people: the writing is not yet too convoluted, nor are there too many layers of meaning (seemingly) to confuse the timid. It seems such a simple tale: a slightly clumsy professor, who is a bit of a fool with such a funny accent. So quaint. So cute.

Good readers realize that Nabokov has squirreled away (so to speak) some of his most potent messages: Pnin is possibly his most noble and kind soul in his canon (which is to say a Big Bertha): Pnin is a profound scholar, a man of enormous passion and commitment, a perfect father to his ex-wife's son to another man, still devoted to her despite her crassness, really a mensch. And hovering over and around this tale the Emigre milieu in the mid 20th Century is encapsulated and preserved as refulgently as the White Russian world of Berlin was captured in "The Gift".

I read this dreadful paperback edition when I was a child the age of Victor in the book when he gave Pnin the glass bowl: the ridiculous image of the young coeds and the silly depiction of Pnin are horribly, terribly nostalgic to me now... I would have anything to have it back!

A Classic Jill Krementz Book

While Jill Krementz is a talented photographer, what my daughter and I really loved about this series was the very detailed text. She was fascinated to learn that each level at the School of American Ballet wears a different color leotard. She sympathized with the dancer who wants a new role in The Nutcracker, but gets the same casting. She learned the difference between a class, a rehearsal, and a performance - all opportunities to dance, but each with a specific purpose.
The original Jill Krementz books, like this one, were printed in black and white. A few later books ("A Very Young Skier") are in full color. But while the color photos look more contemporary and appealing, the later books are "dumbed down" - the text is very short, more like picture captions than narrative.
For the wonderful sense of detail you need the classic titles like "A Very Young Dancer." They make a dancer's life so real, a young reader can easily picture herself (or himself) doing the same. And that's the real power of this series: instead of being a passive spectator, the young reader becomes a participant. My daughter is now dancing in The Nutcracker for her ninth (and last) year. I think "A Very Young Dancer" was a big help along the way.

A ballet dancer's review

I am a ballet dancer. I have been dancing for 15 years now, and this is still one of my favorite books. I was introduced to it when I was about 5 and it facinated me. The whole story seemed true to what I knew about ballet and Stephanie, the main character, lived my biggest dreams! For years, I only borrowed it from the library, and soon it was one of the most worn in their collection! Finally, we moved away and the next library didn't have it, but Mom found it at a used book store and bought it for me. I ended up meeting David Richards, a teacher in the book, at a ballet competition and he signed it for me. He told me that Stephanie doesn't dance any more, and I don't think she ever made it into New York City Ballet company or any other ballet company. Like I said earlier, I've been dancing 15 years and this book, to me, is even more a true embodiment of what the every-day life of a ballet dancer is! I've known this book so long that I can quote it forwards and backwards, and almest every sentence is or has been true for me! I just finished a run of Nutcracker and, "I tore a little pink ribbon off the pantaloons that I wore in the party scene to keep for a souvenir."-to quote page 118. I am positive that current dancers, former dancers, future dancers, and sancers in their dreams will absolutly love this book, especially because it is so true to what they feel!

AN INSTANT CLASSIC!, It Should Be Reprinted...

I received this book as a Christmas gift around 1980, I believe. I cannot tell you how much this book meant to me as a girl. I must have read it about 200 times. My mother recently moved and was going through all our childhood things and found the book packed away. She gave it to me. I was so delighted because I thought I'd lost the book years ago. I sat down immediately and read it again. And yep...its still as good as it ever was.

About the Author
Richard Poole is the author of "The North African Atlantic Hidden Birthright." Mr. Poole does not have a degree as a theologian; but in his quest for biblical truth, he has read the Bible seven times from the beginning to the end. He wants to share his findings with the blessings of YAH (YAH Hebrew name). Mr. Poole said that reading the Bible from the beginning to the end helped him to understand what YAH planned for his life. He credited the Bible for his love of history, which led him to do independent research outside of the Bible. In the early 1980's, he was captivated when he heard about the Black tribe of Israel living in Ethiopia, known to be the tribe of Dan. This is when YAH enlightened him to interpret the prophecies in the book of Deuteronomy concerning the "Curse," and the patriarchs Jacob and Moses prophecies.

Very good book. We all should read this book and buy another copy for someone that's lost and pray that they find themselves too. Good book highly recommended.

I think this is a good book for those of African decent starting their journey to the truth about who they are and our true birth right as the ancient Hebrew Israelites. Praise Yah as he opens the blind eyes and prophecy reveils.

A Practical Guide to Twitter

I received a review copy from Jason for the Twitter Marketing book. I am a big fan of his - lots of stuff that's free and easy-to-understand for a small business owner like me. This book is short and to the point. It has pointers to free resources for Twitter marketing, plus this is one of the few Twitter marketing books that also has worksheets and "hands on" activities. Well done.

Well written guide to Twitter Marketing

I have had a love hate relationship with Twitter over the last five years. I have tried to use it for business purposes off and on, finding in the end that it was very time consuming and produced little results for the effort that I was putting in. As small business clients demand that we use Twitter, I persist but would like to be more effective and efficient. Jason McDonald's "Twitter Marketing Workbook" has some clear and concise directions, and tools, to help any business do exactly that. McDonald's guide showed me that my Tweeting strategy wasn't very effective and I now have some great tools to both find content and create my own. This is a wonderful guide to marketing on Twitter. I received a review copy in exchange for an honest review.

Now a days many people are using social sites like twitter, Facebook for business purpose. I have read another book from this Author regarding on Facebook marketing. I also bought this.
This book is packed with bunch of unknown and important tips on Twitter marketing. Author described very easily how to make business properly and successfully by using of Twitter site. As a worker of online marketing i'd say this book will help me in a great way. I was bit confused about that but now i have got a clear notion about Twitter marketing.
