King George: What Was His Problem?: Everything Your Schoolbooks Didn't Tell You About the American Revolution, by Steve Sheinkin

What do the most famous traitor in history, hundreds of naked soldiers, and a salmon lunch have in common? They’re all part of the amazing story of the American Revolution.

Entire books have been written about the causes of the American Revolution. This isn't one of them. What it is, instead, is utterly interesting, antedotes (John Hancock fixates on salmon), from the inside out (at the Battle of Eutaw Springs, hundreds of soldiers plunged into battle "naked as they were born") close-up narrative filled with little-known details, lots of quotes that capture the spirit and voices of the principals ("If need be, I will raise one thousand men, subsist them at my own expense, and march myself at their head for the relief of Boston" -- George Washington), and action, It's the story of the birth of our nation, complete with soldiers, spies, salmon sandwiches, and real facts you can't help but want to tell to everyone you know.

King George: What Was His Problem?: Everything Your Schoolbooks Didn't Tell You About the American Revolution by Steve Sheinkin, National Book Award Finalist Author of Bomb, a Newbery Honor Book, is a fun, funny way for young readers to learn about a chapter of American history, which has been popularized by Lin-Manuel Miranda's hit Broadway show Hamilton.

“For middle-graders who find Joy Hakim’s 11-volume A History of US just too daunting, historian Sheinkin offers a more digestible version of our country’s story. . . . The author expertly combines individual stories with sweeping looks at the larger picture―tucking in extracts from letters, memorable anecdotes, pithy characterizations and famous lines with a liberal hand.” ―Kirkus Reviews

From Booklist
In his amusing opening statement, Confessions of a Textbook Writer, Sheinkin divulges that while writing history textbooks, he stashed away the good stuff, cool stories that he knew would be edited out. Some of them appear in this riveting account that was first published as a paperback called The American Revolution (2005). The new edition features many droll line drawings that suit the tone of the writing and source notes for the extensive quotes. Sheinkin clearly conveys the gravity of events during the Revolutionary period, but he also has the knack of bringing historical people to life and showing what was at stake for them as individuals as well as for the new nation. Often irreverent, the humor and informal tone of the writing help break through the patina of praise that too often encases figures from the American Revolution in books for young people. Vivid storytelling makes this an unusually readable history book. Grades 4-7. --Carolyn Phelan

Review
“For middle-graders who find Joy Hakim's 11-volume A History of US just too daunting, historian Sheinkin offers a more digestible version of our country's story. . . With a healthy "Whatever Happened To..." section, this animates the Revolution's times, events and people in a way that standard textbooks don't. A second volume on the Civil War, Two Miserable Presidents, is also out.” ―Kirkus Reviews

Sure to fascinate readers of all ages
By Midwest Book Review
Though written for young adults, King George: What Was His Problem? is a take on the history of the American Revolutionary War sure to fascinate readers of all ages. King George: What Was His Problem? mentions details about the war that are often left out of textbooks, but all the anecdotes are entirely true! From the real reason why Benedict Arnold turned traitor (he felt underappreciated and needed money), to the battle of Eutaw Springs where patriot soldiers fought "naked as they day they were born", to the story of a woman who fought with American troops while dressed as a man, to the straight scoop on the founding fathers and much more. Cartoony black-and-white illustrations and a final thumbnail biography section about the rest of the lives of the Revolutionary War's major players round out this extremely readable introduction to America's struggle for independence. Very highly recommended especially for public and grade school children's' library collections.

Take your powder and take your gun / Report to General Washington
By E. R. Bird
Children are taught history. They turn into teenagers and find out that much of what they learned was prettified or their textbooks left out huge chunks of morally ambiguous grey matter. They go to college (some of them) and view with extreme skepticism any history, knowing as they do now that every historical text was written by someone with an agenda. And then sometimes, once in a great while, they return to the historical moments they learned about in their youth and try to figure out, really figure out, what happened all those centuries ago. In this case, author Steve Sheinkin's journey took a slightly different route. He was a writer of historical textbooks and to his chagrin he watched as the most interesting aspects of his recaps and historical pieces were thrown on the cutting room floor (so to speak) while the dull, rote, standard "facts" got left in. The solution? Write his own hilarious encapsulation of the American Revolution with every loony detail and fascinating fact intact and present. And if he happened to make the entire war more interesting and understandable in the process, so be it. Paired with illustrator Tim Robinson, Sheinkin isn't adverse to a little skimming himself, but for the most part this is probably the most interesting book on the revolution for kids you're going to find this side of Jean Fritz.

We all know about the American Revolution, right? There was this tea party and... uh.. Paul Revere rode around on a horse. And there was this crazy king who ruled us and "don't fire before you see the whites of their eyes" and... yeah. That stuff. A little foggy on the details? Well in "King George: What Was His Problem?" author Steve Sheinkin brings the 18th century into focus like no one else. With section headings like "Revere and That Other Guy" and "How to Start a Revolution", kids will learn just as much about George Washington's atrocious love poetry as they will the details of "General Burgoyne's Pretty Good Plan". The term "history comes alive" is trite, but if it weren't I'd definitely employ it when describing this book. Illustrations by Tim Robinson complement the action and back matter includes a "Whatever Happened To...?" section that talks about the rest of the major players' lives, heavily researched and beautifully presented Source Notes, and Quotation Notes.

What's nice about this title is that unlike a textbook it doesn't indulge in the notion that history is a series of unambiguous facts. History is a slippery eel here, and different accounts often receive equal attention. And be aware that even though Sheinkin likes to pepper his book with the mildly ridiculous, he never descends into rumor or hearsay. So basically if you're looking for some corroboration to that rumor you heard that George Washington had a particularly large tuchis, seek thee elsewhere. And just look at all the stuff that adults like myself never learned in school! Elements like the fact that British official John Malcolm ripped the tar and feathers (and skin) off his body to send in a box to the British government. Mind you, for the sake of time and space the author has had to pare down much of the information about this time period. Mostly this works but there are some simplifications that get a touch too simple. "No taxation without representation" is explained as meaning basically "We're not paying!" which isn't precisely true.

In terms of the morally grey areas studiously avoided by our fifth grade history teachers, Sheinkin does pretty well. For example, there will probably be a fair amount of kids who view the terrorizing of taxman Andrew Oliver for the violent mob behavior it was. What's so nice, though, is that Sheinkin tries to avoid telling child readers what to think. He just lays out the facts and lets them speak for themselves. Plus I like that he would stand up for the British soldiers too. "Did the soldiers deserve such hatred? Maybe not. Most were seventeen - and eighteen-year-old boys from poor families. This was the only job they could get . . ." And when it comes to first person accounts you sometimes run into sentences like "British and American witnesses tell different versions of the story. You'll have to listen to some of the evidence and come to your own conclusions." Heaven.

That said there is the question of the slaves and African Americans to consider here. Teaching kids about the Colonial Days in school always sort of skims over this stuff. We are taught that the American Revolution was a good thing. Yet how often are we taught that part of the reason some of the colonists rebelled was to hold onto their slaves? Remember, the British had abolished slavery in England by this point. How much longer before they attempted to do the same in America? Sheinkin to his credit makes note of the African-American and their contributions to the American cause whenever it is possible and appropriate to do so. And he does mention that the British opposed slavery and the American didn't. Yet he never attempts to explain or solve one of the biggest mysteries connection with the slaves; Why on earth did some of them help the American cause? Seriously! If the British winning might mean a potential end to slavery why did people like Prince Estabrook, John Glover's black and white regiment, and especially James Armistead (who remained enslaved until 1787) help the colonists? Did they not know the English were opposed? Sheinkin couldn't hope to cover every aspect of the war, but if he's writing a book that discusses the things we're never taught in school, I'd think that this would be the number one mystery to confront head on (or at least touch on at more length than is found here). A brief "the story of our country is not a fairy tale" is better than most books, but I still wish for more.

Illustrator Tim Robinson has done a fine job providing pictures of the major players and important maps from the time period. The major players are recognizable and pop up on the sides of pages unexpected. Robinson does, however, have this very odd habit of giving all his men long eyelashes. Benedict Arnold, for example, appears to have more in common with Flower from "Bambi" than as our favorite traitor. The effect of these lashes is a kind of Boy Georgeification of our Founding Fathers and their British opponents. I happen to find it kind of awesome, but there's no denying that it's an odd way to go about things. The design of the book itself is particularly good with the words integrated with images in fun ways. The eye moves about each page easily, but the pictures and sidebars are never so prolific as to prove distracting or overwhelming.

In the back of this book you will find a section of titles called a "Collection of quotes, memoirs, and other primary sources by Revolution participants," that is prefaced by a section explaining why first person accounts are fabulous. This book goes beyond merely teaching kids about the American Revolution. It goes so far as to turn some of them into history buffs cold. And while I wish some aspects had been covered a little more, that's my own agenda talking. Essentially this may be the ideal thing to hand to a kid who is required to read some kind of book about the Revolution. Who knows? They may end up enjoying history. Good stuff.

Raucous Royals Book Review: A history book faster than Billy Dawes famous ride...
By Carlyn Beccia
I bought this book because of the title. I have always thought George III was a dullard so I was dieing to find out exactly what the title promised...what was his problem??? When I opened it up, I realized that this book was about the American Revolution (Yes, I missed the small print in the subtitle). Horror! Not another American history book. As a native of Boston, we laugh at the tourists who think the Battle of Bunker Hill was really fought on Bunker Hill. And there are only so many Boston duck tours and Lexington Battle reenactments that one person can stand in a lifetime. So you can imagine my disappointment when I realized the book that I thought would teach kids about royalty was really about those ruffians, our founding fathers. Don't kids have enough books on the American Revolution?

Boy was I wrong. Kids need this book.

First off, Sheinkin's book is full of amusing antidotes about real people and not the cardboard cutouts that appear in text books. For example, who would have thought that Sam Adams, the sharp dressed guy on my favorite beer, was a sloppy dresser and had a thing for salmon. Did you know that Patrick Henry was a bit of a motor mouth? Yes, we hear tales of Washington's troops being a bunch of hooligans, but did you know that Washington also had to break up a thousand-man snow ball fight between Massachusetts and Virginia?

What really sucked me in was not just the trivia. Sheinkin has a rare ability to tell history from all sides without getting too weighed down in the details. Best of all, he remembered the ladies. For example, did you know that Hannah Davis could watch the minutemen battling from her house? Have you ever thought about what Dorothy Quincy was doing in the middle of the melee? You will have to get the book to find out.

Readers also get plenty of real quotes, letters, maps, and George Washington's bad love poems. The text book information is there, but the pace is faster than Billy Dawes famous ride (Sheinkin calls this section "Revere and That Other Guy") Yes, King George III only makes a few cameo appearances, but the reader won't miss him. (I still think he is a dullard) Overall, what really makes King George work is the fact that readers can take away far more than George's dilemma. You start to see what everyone's problem was, and most importantly, how so many colorful personalities (with very different opinions) came together for one goal.

A quick mention on the art: Tim Robinson's hilarious pen and ink illustrations also give an extra layer of sauciness to the characters. George has the perpetual "I can't believe I am being disobeyed" look of shock and Robinson captures the blustering, larger-than-life nature of Ethan Allen perfectly.

Note: The age range is 9-12, but I really hate when Amazon dumps books into this category. The age range should say 9+ because adults will enjoy this book as much as kids.

A Must Read for Travelers to Myanmar..!!
By Greg G.
This is a very well-written, well-thought out book that is a must for anyone visiting or planning to move to Myanmar. In a very organized and easy-to-follow manner, the author walks you through all the steps and precautions you will need for your trip or move to this exoctic and not well-known country. But more, through this book you will easily learn about the culture (and the culture-shock) you may experience, which will give you a better understanding of how and why things work the way they do in Myanmar. Don't travel there without first reading this book!!

Learn more about certain disorders..
By meredith j.
Autism, Asperger's syndrome is disorder which is affecting both children and adults. People affected with this syndrome find it difficult to interect with other peole, specially in social settings. It is because they can't understand the emotion of others and they often behave in a manner that is unacceptable to other people.
Book describes what Asperrger's syndrom is, how to read the symptopms, how to diagnose this disorder.. There is also story of a person who was married to someone who suffered from this disorder, it is very useful read, what to do, how to behave, and try to find a help..Once diagnosed, one could do something about it..The worst thiing would be to do nothing.
There are some things that have to set right as people with this disorder have to have routine, people around have to show a great patience. The key to successful living with someone with Asperger's syndrome is patience. It takes love, patience and support to live happy and fullfilled life with your loved ones. There is also ADHD described, and things that one can do to help, including natural remedies.
Nice and useful read!

Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (Third Edition) (Norton Critical Editions), by Mark Twain

This perennially popular Norton Critical Edition reprints for the first time the definitive Iowa-California text of Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, complete with all original illustrations by Edward Windsor Kemble and John Harley. The text is accompanied by explanatory annotations.

"Contexts and Sources" provides readers with a rich selection of documents related to the historical background, language, composition, sale, reception, and newly discovered first half of the manuscript of Mark Twain's greatest work. Included are letters on the writing of the novel, excerpts from the author's autobiography, samples of bad poetry that inspired his satire (including an effort by young Sam Clemens himself), a section on the censorship of Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by schools and libraries over a hundred-year period, and commentary by David Carkeet on dialects of the book and by Earl F. Briden on its "racist" illustrations. In addition, this section reprints the full texts of both "Sociable Jimmy," upon which is based the controversial theory that Huck speaks in a "black voice," and "A True Story, Repeated Word for Word As I Heard It," the first significant attempt by Mark Twain to capture the speech of an African American in print.

"Criticism" of Adventures of Huckleberry Finn is divided into "Early Responses" (including the first negative review) and "Modern Views" by Victor A. Doyno, T. S. Eliot, Jane Smiley, David L. Smith, Shelley Fisher Fishkin (the "black voice" thesis), James R. Kincaid (a rebuttal of Fishkin), and David R. Sewell. Also included is Toni Morrison's moving personal "Introduction" to the troubling experience of reading and re-reading Mark Twain's masterpiece.

“A Chronology and Selected Bibliography” are also included.

Amazon.com Review
Mark Twain's classic novel, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, tells the story of a teenaged misfit who finds himself floating on a raft down the Mississippi River with an escaping slave, Jim. In the course of their perilous journey, Huck and Jim meet adventure, danger, and a cast of characters who are sometimes menacing and often hilarious.

Though some of the situations in Huckleberry Finn are funny in themselves (the cockeyed Shakespeare production in Chapter 21 leaps instantly to mind), this book's humor is found mostly in Huck's unique worldview and his way of expressing himself. Describing his brief sojourn with the Widow Douglas after she adopts him, Huck says: "After supper she got out her book and learned me about Moses and the Bulrushers, and I was in a sweat to find out all about him; but by and by she let it out that Moses had been dead a considerable long time; so then I didn't care no more about him, because I don't take no stock in dead people." Underlying Twain's good humor is a dark subcurrent of Antebellum cruelty and injustice that makes The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn a frequently funny book with a serious message.

From Publishers Weekly
Considered the first great American novel, part of Finn's charm is the wisdom and sobering social criticism deftly lurking amongst the seemingly innocent observations of the uneducated Huck and the even-less-educated escaped slave, Jim. William Dufris's voice, unpretentious and disarming, like the book's main characters, seems the perfect armature on which to hang this literary strategy. Although he does an expert job with the entire cast, Dufris's delivery of Jim's dialogue is his crowning achievement. Out of context, Dufris's Jim might sound mocking and racist, due to his expert delivery of Twain's regional vernacular. Ignorance and intelligence, however, are not mutually exclusive, and taken as a whole, Jim's mind and heart come shining through, allowing the listener to reflect on their own assumptions. Tantor Media includes the entire text as a digital e-book on the final CD, a wise and thoughtful move in a market with swift and changing currents.

From School Library Journal
Grade 9 Up-All the highwater tales of Huck's journey are in this abridged versionAhis faked death, the Jackson Island sojourn, the Grangerford-Shepherdson feud, the Duke and the King, and his reunion with Tom Sawyer. Along the way, we are treated to a sensual feast of the sights, smells, and rhythms of the Mississippi River and the humanistic education of Huck that culminates in his assisting in Jim's escape. The familiar adventures of Huck and runaway slave Jim's odyssey on a raft floating down the Mississippi have been well documented previously in audio format with noted versions read by Ed Begley, Will Wheaton (both from Dove), and the 1985 Grammy nominated Durkin Hayes production read by Dick Cavett. This version, beautifully read by actor Mike McShane, is a wonderful contribution to the recorded Twain canon. McShane handles multiple characterizations well, but excels in Huck's folksy narrative voice and Jim's understated power and dignity. School and public libraries should not miss this excellent rendition.

There has been nothing as good since. ” I do find the language jarring
By John Sieben
Don't read my review. Read what Hemingway has to say about Huckleberry Finn. I can't resist a short Hemingway quote: “All modern American literature comes from one book by Mark Twain called Huckleberry Finn. American writing comes from that. There was nothing before. There has been nothing as good since.”

I do find the language jarring. The repeated use of what we now refer to as "the N word" is regrettable, though I am sure the language is historically accurate. The story takes place in a time when other human beings were held as chattel, bought and sold, families broken up at the whim of a legal owner. That's the sin, not what name was put on the enslaved people.

Also, as Hemingway also observes, the final chapters, devoted to Tom Sawyer's plots to free Jim, get tedious.

All in all, a great read.

Frustrating
By D. Wolowsky
What I like:
Mississippi River stuff.
Twains pointing out the Hypocrisies of the slave owners and Southern whites. (I'm a southern white).
Huck's maturation as he and Jim travel down the River.
Huck's inner thoughts and the conclusions that he reaches regarding God, good and evil, black and white, and life in general.
What I didn't like:
Much of Twain's humor isn't humorous.
More unnecessary lying than the story requires. Tedious yarns that Huck spins that are often too long to hold my interest.
The return of Tom Sawyer thereby rendering Huckleberry an idiot again. The several chapters pertaining to the goings on at Aunt Sally's reflected poorly on all concerned and were painful to wade through. I don't understand the authors intent although I don't pretend to be the sharpest bulb in the drawer.
I will long remember some of Jim and Huck's adventures and many of Mark Twain's observations. Having said that I'm afraid I can't think of one person to whom I would recommend the book.

Classic Writing, Fine Illustration; Quality Paper and Printing
By James Ellsworth
I bought this particular edition of 'Huckleberry Finn' for the few but wonderful illustrations done by Scott McKowen. I already owned a gallery-sized digital print of the cover art and I wanted to document where it came from. I also purchased a 'critical edition' of the work with scholarly annotations by Michael Patrick Hearn. Both editions have their strong points: the Sterling Classic edition is a convenient bedside format and the text, without scholarly annotations, reads easily--like any 'regular' book. The Norton critical edition is sufficiently larger in size to be harder to hold. Its purpose is to inform the reader about Mark Twain, the influences on his writing and his aims in writing 'Huckleberry Finn.' There are columns of text along side of columns of notes on every page.

Readers of this review are going to ask: "who is HE to review perhaps the greatest work of fiction in American literature?" I have a literary education and am both a reader and a writer. That helps. I first read 'Huckleberry Finn' as a youth and I marveled at the unfamiliar world of the Mississippi River valley and the unfamiliar time in the history of our country. I read the work purely for its adventure. There is plenty of that. Even today, when readers are more sensitive to the struggle for Civil Rights for all Americans...and when regional dialects are possibly of little interest, the book holds up well as an adventure and as a coming of age story. Most teens will sympathize with Huck's desire for freedom from adult supervision. This has its parallel in Jim's desire for freedom from slavery as an adult. Mark Twain is also spinning a 'yarn' about a young nation and about a frontier full of people who are very resistant to 'gentrification' along 'Eastern' or European lines of civilization and manners.

The professional literary critics who have applied their talents to this book feel that Twain not only spun a yarn but that he spun the book out with a padded and unsatisfying third quarter where Tom Sawyer is brought back into the story to little good purpose. Ever mindful of his commercial market, Twain tried everything he knew to attract readers. He was famed as a humorist but he didn't hesitate to descend into burlesque where he thought that would boost sales. American authors also relied on salesmen to solicit subscriptions to works, releasing sections of the book in sequence over time at attractive prices. Longer works meant a higher overall price for a complete work. It appears that Commerce trumped Art in the final parts of 'Huckleberry Finn.'

Readers with an advanced interest in American literature will likely relish the careful report of local color championed by Twain and Ambrose Bierce (et al.) and 'Huckleberry Finn' is still widely admired for its nuanced treatment of local dialects and usage in the development of American English. Those features are present on the page of both editions but are only explained for the uninitiated in the Norton critical text edition.

Messenger of Beauty: The Life and Visionary Art of Nicholas Roerich, by Jacqueline Decter Ph.D.

A celebration of the artist, mystic, and Nobel nominee Nicholas Roerich, whose life and work significantly influenced the development of modern art and culture.
Messenger of Beauty opens the door to the mystical world of Nicholas Roerich and invites us to witness his far-reaching vision. Artist, writer, educator, archaeologist, explorer, mystic, and peacemaker, Roerich (1874-1947) left a rich legacy of some 7,000 paintings, drawings, and set and costume designs (most notably for Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring); 30 books on the mystic East; and countless articles and lectures. The Roerich Peace Pact--a remarkable treaty signed by President Roosevelt and 26 other heads of state that sought to preserve cultural monuments during times of war--earned the artist a nomination for the Nobel Peace Prize. Messenger of Beauty includes 88 color plates that cover the full scope of Roerich's artistic career, from ancient Slavic, mythic, and archaeological subjects to breathtaking Himalayan landscapes and religious themes that span the spiritual traditions of the world.

can't go wrong with this one
By Caraculiambro
If you're looking for a nice coffee-table book with reproductions of Roerich's paintings, this book will do nicely. If you're looking for a text biography of Roerich, this book will also do. It's basically a combination of the two.

Unlike many coffee table books, the text you're getting is not sparse: you're getting a respectable, critical biography, not just a load of hagiographic gushing. But that, unfortunately, is the problem. When you sit down to read through it, you've got this awkward book to hold, making it hard to curl up with this thing.

Purists might want to note that the color plates are matte. I'm no judge of paper quality, but the caliber of the reproductions didn't strike me as especially stunning. If you simply care about the quality of the color reproductions, I don't think you're going to be jumping for joy when you see this.

This is an exquisitely beautiful book and immediately transports one to 'another dimention'. Roerich's paintings, his unusual use of colour and hues capture a luminous quality that speaks to the soul. His writing, paintings and travels are a true inspiration of the human spirit.

Amazon.com Review
It's a new world: after decades of evolution, the leadership theory taught by business schools across the country seems hardly recognizable anymore. Would-be CEOs, it seems, can no longer content themselves with beating competitors, winning market share, and growing profits. In this new world, the most effective leaders are expected to exercise keen emotional intelligence and do nothing else than help improve the lives of colleagues and surrounding societies. Richard Boyatzis and Annie McKee popularized this idea with their bestseller, Resonant Leadership, and those who enjoyed that book will likely want to investigate fellow academic C. Clinton Sidle’s addition to the literature, The Leadership Wheel

Sidle's ambitions become clear early in the book, when he quotes not just pedestrian business leaders but Czech playwright and Nobel laureate Vaclav Havel. "The salvation of this world lies nowhere else but in the human heart…Without a global revolution of consciousness nothing will change for the better, and the catastrophe towards which this world is headed will be unavoidable." Sidle's leadership theory begins from a sweeping view of human nature and what he describes as the "evolutionary urge to become." The Cornell professor uses historical examples from a variety of fields to illustrate his point that when this urge becomes directed only to self-aggrandizing ends, people become dissatisfied. We must search for greater purpose. In that purpose, Sidle argues, leadership finds it truest extensions, and society finds its greatest value.

The "leadership wheel" to which the book's title refers rests on 5 roles, or stages, through which leaders develop. Sidle has developed his research on the roles through an extensive consulting practice and years of work with Cornell's MBA students, and many businesspeople will find the concepts familiar and resonant with other, similar exercises they may have done. Like many good business books, Sidle's calls not just for reading but active participation. The text contains numerous exercises and quizzes on which readers can explore their leadership personae and "fit" with different segments of the leadership wheel, and many will appreciate this hands-on approach to learning.

Throughout the text, Sidle exhorts his audience to embrace the emergent realities of the leadership environment: the fact that old command-and-control structures have lost ground to less hierarchical and more democratic organizational designs, and that leadership students are increasingly required to understand and even to speak language of self-actualization, both for themselves and their followers. While not all will agree with Sidle's ideas, few will be able to deny their popularity in today's world, and the need to adapt to them in one way or the other. Reading The Leadership Wheel provides a good start. --Peter Han

Review

“Clinton Sidle reminds us that leadership development is not merely a one-time event but a critically important journey for individuals, teams, and organizations--a demanding process that requires the cultivation of genuine self-knowledge. The Leadership Wheel's call for enlightened and socially responsible leadership will benefit managers and executives at all levels and challenge them to lead more authentically.” ―John Alexander, President, Center for Creative Leadership

“The Leadership Wheel provides a vision of enlightened leadership by pulling together the three spokes of authentic leadership--the leader, the organization, and society--into one integrated process. The Leadership Wheel is a great tool to navigate leaders and organizations toward sustainable value creation.” ―Kevin Cashman, CEO, LeaderSource and author of Leadership from the Inside Out and Awakening the Leader Within

“The Leadership Wheel reaffirms the critical importance of having the basis for leadership development being self awareness, self-discovery, and a deep inner journey that circles back through life to enhance one's self development, the development of others, and performance. The Leadership Wheel demonstrates through numerous exercises how leadership development can be learned each and every day.” ―Bruce Avolio, Director, Gallup Leadership Institute

“This book is worth reading for its very comprehensive and human way of viewing leadership. What gives even more value is the way Sidle shows precisely how to use the Wheel in working with teams and leaders. The book is a valuable asset for anyone committed to developing leaders.” ―Peter Block, author of The Answer to How Is Yes and Stewardship, and co-author, with Peter Koestenbaum, of Freedom and Accountability at Work

“The Leadership Wheel reveals an inspiring and original five point picture of what it takes to be an emotionally intelligent, resonant leader. Clint Sidle has managed to combine fresh and important insights with practical advice for developing resonant leaders, great teams, and vibrant, successful organizations. Great exercises!” ―Annie McKee, Co-Chair of the Teleos Leadership Institute

“Clint Sidle's model offers an inspiring and genuinely new approach to servant leadership. This lively, engaging book challenges people to rethink their roles and the purposes of business. The Leadership Wheel clearly demonstrates that financial success and socially responsible business are not mutually exclusive. Best of all, chapter exercises guide the reader on how to make it happen at the individual, team, and organizational levels.” ―Ken Blanchard, co-author of The One Minute Manager® and The Servant Leader

“ . . . if more business scholars and business people would actually practice the approach outlined by Sidle it just might revolutionize the way business is conducted because it would significantly alter the way leaders are trained and developed!” ―Dr. David L. Luechauer and Dr. William B. Locander of Jacksonville University

Spiritual insights for business leaders
By Rolf Dobelli
C. Clinton Sidle finds leadership lessons in psychologist Carl Jung's categorization of human personality into archetypes based on ancient mythological symbols and in Jung's belief that each person travels on a "heroic journey" through life. Sidle adapts these Jungian ideas and the symbol of the wheel to create a paradigm of business leadership that individuals, teams and organizations can use to reach their goals. Because he tries to fit so many concepts into his wheel, readers may feel after a while that they are spinning in circles. Nonetheless, the book is loaded with useful exercises and examples. Although Sidle's approach is esoteric, we recommend it to managers with a spiritual bent who want to develop their leadership qualities and discover a style that suits them.

A diverse interesting perspective on leadership.

Clinton Sidle's approach helps discovering a value-driven leadership side, rooted into history and native cultures. But it is not only philosophical and intellectualistic, as it also provides very practical tools to reflect on behaviors and on how to" play the wheel" of corporate life.
