This study guide does not cover all the problems. Go to chegg.com and buy homework help for this text book. It cost less than this book and it actually helps. However, there is a limited time.

Only helpful because the text is so bad

As the actual textbook is so difficult to read, I bought a copy of the student study guide in the hope of making my venture through linear algebra easier. This study guide gets two stars for the summaries at the beginning of each section. These summaries strip the concepts down to what is really important and are a significant improvement over what is written in the book. However, the solutions and hints to the exercises consist mostly of one sentence hints (about a ratio of 5 hints to 1 actually worked problem) to a small subset of the problems in the book. In one section out of 32 questions (counting the sub-questions individually) the author gives you two worked problems and 8 "hints". Maybe that would be enough if the examples in the text were better but they seem unreadable for most people. I recommend using Google for your help as opposed to this book.

Useful but not essential

I've bought student study guides for many books, and sometimes the study guides are almost required, but not in this case. Keep in mind that not every solution is in this book, only a few. If you're having trouble, this study guide will definitely help though. The textbook can almost give you everything you need if you're understanding the concepts. If your problem is with proofs, the hints in this guide can really help you out.

This book is really good. it has covered almost every fundamental what an electrical engg. looks out for. It will be really helpful for the designers who are looking out for some basics. Moreover it is a compilation of all fundamentals in one book and is a bible. Hence, it should be a part of every electrical engineer's collection of books.

An Excellent Engineering Reference

This huge book contains almost everything the practicing engineer needs, including definitions of engineering terms, solutions to common problems, rules-of-thumb, tables and equations, and references to other engineering sources.

Keep in mind that no matter how big (2800+ pages) an engineering reference could be, there is no way that you will be able to find every single detail in every field of engineering covered in enough depth to write your thesis. You will find the fundamental information, principles, quick calculations methods, illustrations, and diagrams, which will save the industrial practitioner valuable time.

I really believe this book is an excellent engineering reference. I am an Electronic Engineer, but I have been working for the last 16 years as an Instrumentation, Automation and Process Control Engineer for the Oil & Gas Industry. As a result I have been involved with Chemical and Mechanical Engineering issues in a day to day basic. I found this book to be a helpful reference in those fields and also in other very different fields, like engineering economics and management.

I own this book, and for me it was a very good investment.

Suitable for Sophomore Engineering Students

Generally I like Dr. Dorf's work, but this particular volume is not one of my favorites. It's not really a handbook; it's a broad survey course for sophomore engineering students. There simply is insufficient depth in any one subject for a working engineer to design or simulate a machine or process or structure. I read a few pages everyday and managed to get through the whole book, but I cannot say it was a pleasant experience.

Here is a brief list of real handbooks I own which have the necessary depth to use in the real world:

1. Condon's Handbook of Physics
2. Eshbach's Handbook of Engineering Fundamentals
3. Mark's Standard Handbook for Mechanical Engineering
4. Markus Guidebook of Electronic Circuits
5. Potter's Handbook of the Engineering Sciences
6. Tuma's Handbook of Physical Calculations
7. Grigoriev's Handbook of Physical Quantities
8. CRC Handbook of Chemistry and Physics
9. Allen's Astrophysical Quantities
10. Springer Handbook of Condensed Matter and Materials Data
11. CRC Concise Encyclopedia of Mathematics

All of these works contain substantially more information per page than The Engineering Handbook.

The organization is also somewhat questionable. The math and materials sections are in the back of the book, instead of the front. The chapter on linear systems and models is separated from the chapter on control systems, etc.

I don't want to imply that there aren't any worthwhile chapters. I liked the chapter on wind energy...
Recommended to sophomore engineering students, not working engineers.

Overcrowded, unorganized, distracting format

I used this text for an upper level business managment class and found it to very unorganized and overcrowded. The overuse of bolded words was extremely distracting and made it difficult to find the root of a subject quickly, as it bolded the same word every single time it was used, even within the same paragraph.

Even better than the original, which is terrific

This, as is the previous edition, is a great chess book. Don't take any anonymous person's word for it (including mine). Google "John Watson Chess review Stohl Instructive Games " and see what an acknowledged, high-quality chess reviewer says. It's advanced, but worth the money and the work to read/play through.

What's not to love?

I was surprised to see this rated modestly by a limited sample of readers. I already owned the earlier paper edition, so I recently picked up this edition for my Kindle. I consider it good enough to buy twice , obviously. I like all of the author's work that I've seen. I can see no basis to criticize it.

Good if using for individuals child, I wanted to use it for my classroom. Didn't work out that well. I ended up tearing out the pages, putting them in plastic sleeves, using an erase able marker, and using in centers.
