Still a classic discussion of chronic ennui

Kuhn's work has stood the test of time. The problem of chronic ennui is one of the most important issues facing our time. A silent malady of the soul traceable back to the Ancient Greeks Kuhn leaves us in no doubt that the apathy and sadness of this malady is not merely the product of our own period - though it seems to be much more pronounced in our own time. Prodigious research, immense stamina, the work took almost ten years to complete. A largely unknown classic. See also George Steiner's 'In Blue Beard's Castle', Sean Desmond Healy's 'Boredom self and Culture', and other texts on what Schopenhauer called 'the malady of the modern age'.As a PhD researcher on the topic I feel myself to be following in the footsteps of the master. This is the tenth volume of a detailed study about the Silmarillion- era (Pre- Lord of the rings). No question from the silmarillion, is left unanswered after you've read this hyper-detailed book about the fallen ainur, Melkor, most known under the name Morgoth meaning "the enemy of the world". Here is described the rise of Arda, the assignments given by Eru, the lord of all, to the ainur (or the Valar in their earthly presence), AND how Melkor (who was Eru's favorite and most skilled of all) fell from grace and lusted to control the earth and everything in it. In this book , you will find how immensely great was Morgoth's power and how he could even distort Eru's very designs in the birth of the universe. It also includes detailed information about particular elven kings, half elven and men, who had a particularly important role in the history and shaping of Beleriand and Middle-earth. a lot of readers of the silmarillion felt that many details werent sufficiently explored and found the story hard to follow. Morgoth's Ring provides the 'in depth' look required to further appreciate the silmarillion. All fans of middle-earth and fantasy are urged to get this superb annal of the history of middle-earth and dive once more into the realm of the tree-light gems...

Drafts of 'The Silmarillion' Part I

'Morgoth's Ring' and 'The War of the Jewels' are both collections of draft material which would become the postumously published 'The Silmarillion'. In that sense, they stand in the same relation to 'The Silmarillion' as Volumes VI through IX of 'The History of Middle Earth' stand to 'The Lord of the Rings'. The difference is that while Tolkien senior himself published LotR, 'The Silmarillion' was incomplete at the time of Tolkien's death, so these are commentaries on an imcomplete work. If, like me, you compulsively buy everything with Tolkien's name on it, this will make no differnce. But, if, like me, you find the story of the Valar and the origins of the elves in general to be the most interesting part of 'The Silmarillion, then you will find 'Morgoth's Ring' the more interesting of the two volumes. In the end, both volumes add more pieces to that great, but slightly ephemeral quality of deep historicity which makes LoTR and 'The Hobbit' stand head, shoulders, and chest above virtually every other fantasy fiction ever written.

the things you always thought about but never found in the silmarillion

I grew up on tolkieniana: I cannot rememer the first time I read JRRT's works, but I cannot have been more than a few feet tall. tolkien's universe is so unseparable from my own that at times I look at the falling oak leaves around me and think that they are mallorn. no other bookworld is as real to me as his: no other fictional history is as historical as his.

the morgoth's ring is probably the least read piece of tolkien lore, and for good reasons. it is hard to get your hands on (had it not been for peter jackson's movies, it would probably not exist in paperback), and is considered to be one of christopher tolkien's shadiest amalgamations of facts. the criticism is valid, however, the morgoth's ring answers questions I have pondered for years. a lot of the gaps in the silmarillion can be filled out, or at least lessened, by information collected in this volume. although a strange compilation of notes to a tolkien novice, to a tolkieniast it is of great value. thus, I strongly recommend it to a more tolkien-educated audience.

3rd book in the set for high school math. This series is written at the appropriate level for high school students to get them ready for college. Good introduction to proofs. This series of books is meant for A levels, so it is more difficult than IB, equivalent to a rigorous AP calculus class.

Euclid is celebrated as the father of geometry, and author of the Elements, a book once revered like the Bible, but now a school text. Strangely, Greek manuscripts do not mention Euclid, but speak anonymously of the “author of the Elements”. Did Euclid exist? Was the real author of the Elements a woman, Hypatia? Was she black? The mystery geometry of black Egypt aimed to arouse the soul, and prove equity, as in Plato's story of Socrates and the slave boy. Early Christians had similar beliefs about the soul, but the church changed Christian doctrine to enable its priests to rule. When pagans resisted, the church retaliated violently: it smashed their temples, burnt their libraries, cursed the early beliefs about the soul, and banned philosophy. This plunged Christendom into its Dark Age, but catalysed the Islamic Golden Age. The contrast fuelled envy, and Christian priests incited the Crusades, hoping to grab Muslim wealth—but the Crusades failed beyond Spain. To convert Muslims, who accepted reason, the church now sought mathematics, connecting it to Christian doctrine by changing both. That led to a subtle religious bias in mathematics, and to its racist history. This book is for the layperson concerned that both biases are still being thrust upon schoolchildren today.

This narrative is a perfect example of how even though facts are out in the public, we wont usually connect the dots to realize the lies peddled to us by organized cults. It would have taken immense effort to collect all the facts mentioned in the book. Connecting the dots is the easiest thing.

A systematic annihilation of the myth "most of secular scientific knowledge has originated in Greece". It is the single biggest crime committed against human psych by current secular educators. Many of us would have had a feeling that it is a myth. We can even see the means and opportunity of the church to carry out such a crime through its "world class" universities. After all, even during the age of Internet, authorities get away with lying for several years before truth is uncovered. So it must be very easy in medieval times. The challenge is not finding the means and opportunity. The challenge is finding a motive. You can't really charge them guilty without it. This book provides exactly that, the motive: Why is it necessary for a systematic myth building about origin of knowledge in Greece? What is the necessity for the church(priests to be precise) to start such a myth?

This book is more enlightening to an honest Christian who believes in the doctrine of love but is shocked by doctrine of sin used by Church throughout history to oppress people.

In spirit of following the author's advice in the epilogue, the best way to read the book is to check every fact mentioned by the author after each chapter:
As for those young people who are victims of these biases, get rid of those biases even if they are forced on you by your parents and teachers. A simple way to do so is to ask questions. If the answers sound like story-telling, used to preserve lies, you know what trick is at work. Remember, they can’t capture your mind without your consent. Don’t give that consent: keep asking questions, and see how those stories fall apart.
